Reclaim Your Calm: How Estate Planning Puts “What Ifs” to Rest

March 12, 2025

“What if.”

These words pop up in our minds with increasing frequency in uncertain times.

When we are concerned about our country’s politics or economy—or perhaps both—these worrisome words infect our minds like a virus intent on replicating and dominating our thoughts.

We hear of potential changes to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, and our minds become volcanoes erupting with endless “what ifs.”

  • “What if I need long-term care but I can’t afford it because I end up going through my savings too quickly?”
  • “What if changes to Medicaid make it harder for me to qualify for assistance with long-term care costs?”
  • “What if my loved ones are forced to make difficult financial or caregiving decisions because I didn’t plan my estate properly?”

When these heavy “what ifs” weigh on our minds long enough, we begin to feel powerless when it comes to planning for the future.

Take heart, though.

The future may feel like one big question mark at the moment, but estate planning offers answers.

When the forecast for tomorrow is cloudy with a chance of chaos, estate planning empowers you to shape the future. It offers you control in a time when things feel like they are spiraling out of control.

When we feel like we are losing control, the “what ifs” in our minds multiply. The moment we realize there are still things we can control—and important things at that—we feel more at ease.

So how does estate planning shut down those nagging “what ifs” and create room for calm?

First, it gives you control over your assets, healthcare, and legacy by ensuring that your wishes are legally protected.

Second, it helps you safeguard your wealth, provide for loved ones, minimize taxes, and avoid probate.

Finally, with documents like wills, trusts, and powers of attorney, you can dictate how your estate is managed, make medical decisions in advance, and prevent family disputes.

In the end, estate planning is an excellent way to reclaim your calm in tumultuous times. Start by consulting with an estate planning guide you can trust—someone whose credentials and commitment to client satisfaction inspire confidence.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with their areas of expertise before engaging them. The last thing you need is a new “what if” in the form of the question, “What if this person doesn’t actually know how to help me?”

At Wylkan Law, we are experts in wills, trusts, health care power of attorney, Medicaid and Medicare planning, tax planning and qualified retirement plan distribution, organ donations, powers of attorney and federal, estate, and gift tax returns, too. We use our expertise to offer peace of mind to people like you.

We should mention that not every estate planning attorney has expertise in Medicaid and Medicare planning. These two programs are the source of many “what ifs” for our clients, so it’s a pleasure to help them navigate this complicated terrain.

If you are ready to put some of those loathesome little “what ifs” to bed today, we would love to help. Future-proof your plans—and reclaim your calm—by registering for one of our workshops
